Historians used 476 as a conventional date for the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. In this year the last emperor of this part of this empire (Romulus Augustus) was deposed. The eastern part of the Roman Empire continued to exist from nearly 1,000 years.

What fell was the western part of the Roman Empire. The eastern part of the empire continued to exist for another 1,000 years.

The lands of the west came to be ruled by the peoples who invaded it. The Franks ruled Gaul, the Visigoths ruled Spain and Portugal, the vandals ruled North Africa and the Angles and Saxons ruled England. Italy was ruled by the Ostrogoths for a while. They were then defeated by the Byzantines. Soon after this the Lombards invaded Italy.
