In the context of the Crusades, the term "infidels" primarily referred to Muslims, particularly the followers of Islam in the Holy Land, whom Christian Crusaders sought to reclaim territories such as Jerusalem from. The Crusaders viewed Muslims as non-believers in the Christian faith, justifying their military campaigns as a religious duty to protect and recover sacred Christian sites. This term was also sometimes applied to other groups perceived as enemies of Christianity during the Crusades, including certain Jewish communities and heretical Christian sects.
The Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus wrote a letter to the council of Piacenza in 1095 asking for help to free the christians in Jerusalem from persucation of the Muslims. The pope, Urban II gave permission to kill the infidels (the muslims) at the council of clermont and this caused this mass expedition which followed into the capture of Jerusalem. This first expedition was the bowling ball for all of the other crusades that have followed.
The effect of the crusades was felt in many ways throughout Europe and in the Middle East. In Europe, as one example, religious and nationalistic fervor was aroused against the "infidels" to the East, which resulted in centuries-long distrust and hostility. In the Middle East, similar resentments were born among the Islamic populations, while the sacred sites restored and small populations created by the successful Crusaders contributed to tensions which have lasted into the 21st century.

Christians and Muslims called each other "infidels" during the Crusades because each party believed the other was inferior to them. Infidel directly means " A person who does not believe in religion or who adheres to a religion other than one's own."

In that time, the Catholic church regarded most non-Catholics as infidels, but especially Jews and Muslims. The Crusades were fought by European Christians, many of whom were Catholics, with the goal of driving Muslims out of the Holy Land; many of the crusaders also directed their fury against Jews. I enclose a link about that time in history.
