It was common because women were seen as inferior beings to men. Women were subject to the guidance and wills of their husband. So, when the man was mad at his wife, he was allowed to beat her because back then, the wife was his property. If she made him mad, he could hit her without any legal action taken against him. Women were basically like dogs to their husbands.
