Due to the lack of government following the decline of the Roman Empire, protection could not be granted for trade and trade routes could not be repaired. Due to these reasons, trade and travel became dangerous.
They felled after the fall of Rome because unlike the Romans, Germanic people lived in small communities. They kept order through unwritten rules. They did not develop organized governments or trade systems.Hope i helped:-)

They did not exactly disappear, many of the cities remain but their names are modernized. Cologne, Naples, Milan, Rome, Segovia, Lyon, Paris, London....the list can grow to arm's length.
