What was Hannibals greatest mistake?

The greatest mistake perhaps was when he chose not to besiege Rome but go around and try recruit more soldiers during his time in Italy. Rome took that opportunity to send soldiers to Carthage and Hispania (what is now North Africa and Spain) and thereby forcing Hannibal to return to Carthage and fight the battle of Zama which he lost. If he had beseiged Rome, he might have won and even if he didn't, it would still somehow influence the course of history for beseiging Rome would've kept second Punic War to last longer (for example, beseiging Rome might prevent messengers, orders or soldiers from Rome to leave for other places like Carthage and Hispania and thereby preventing the Battle of Zama to even happen perhaps).

Why did people fight the Romans?

Helping the mamertines: Syracuse attacked the Mamartine garrison at Messana On Sicily -> Mamertines asked Carthage for help -> Carthage agree to aid the Mamertines but they did not want to leave -> Therefore, the Mamertines asked Rome for help in expelling the Cathaginians and Rome obliged. -Zi YiNg Defence: Early Rome already lived in fear of its more powerful neighbour,Carthage ->Rome became more worried when Carthage occupied Messana(northeast corner of Sicily) -> Reason: Geographically, Messna was near to the Greek Towns of Italy under Roman protection -> Romans were concerned that Carthage would want to dominate southern Italy, the same way it had in Sicily -> Thus, Romans decided to fight and defeat Carthage in order to protect its frontier. -Zi YiNg [Adapted from History TB(Sec1), Published by River Valley High School. SGP] One reason is because they wanted land. There wasn't much land back then because people had thought that the world was square, so they were to scared to go and fall of the edge. Another reason is that they hated Christians, so they wanted to kill them all. Yet another reason is because if you go to war and succed than you are in the higher class. Describe what type of person Aeneas was?

The adjective that Vergil most often applies to Aeneas is pius. This is closely related to the English word pious, but a better translation is probably godfearing. All through the Aeneid Vergil shows Aeneas surrendering his own desires to the will of the gods. When Troy falls, Aeneas wants to stay and fight - even if it means being killed. But it is his destiny to leave with the city's gods and carry them to a new home in Italy - so that is what he does.Later in Carthage Aeneas wants to stay with Dido. But he is reminded that the Gods want him to leave and sail for Italy. Aeneas complains, but he obeys.Aeneas has human wishes and desires, but he knows that the greatest of all virtues is Obedience. He would have made an excellent Saint, or an SS officer.

What cause the punic war?

By about 270 BC, Rome and Carthage had become two powerful cities that each sought to expand their territory throughout the Mediterranean. Rome, with her powerful armies, took control of Italy and began expanding into what is now southern France and northern Spain. Carthage, with her powerful navies, took control of southern Spain and islands like Sardinia and the Balearic islands. It was virtually inevitable that the two powers would wind up fighting. The First Punic War started as Rome and Carthage began taking control of the island of Sicily. A mercenary army took control of part of Sicily, and then got into a fight with Syracuse, which was a powerful city in its own right. Afraid of being attacked by Syracuse, the mercenaries begged both Rome and Carthage for help (Rome and Carthage had previously been allies in a recent war against a Greek king named Pyrrhus). Carthage sent help first but when Carthage started taking over their town, the mercenaries begged Rome to help- which Rome reluctantly agreed to do, and they sent an army to assist. The war had begun. The Second Punic War started a little over 20 years after the end of the first one. Rome had won the first war, and imposed a harsh peace upon Carthage. Part of the settlement divided Spain between Rome and Carthage; a small river marked the border between their territories. Fearing Carthage's growing power in Spain, Rome allied with a city-state on Carthage's side of the river. Carthage's legendary general Hannibal attacked and conquered the city, which started the war; he then famously marched his army- including elephants- over the Alps and into Italy. The Third Punic War started about fifty years after the end of the second war. In the treaty ending the second war, Carthage agreed to pay a lot of money to Rome every year for the next fifty years; also, if Carthage needed to go to war, they were required to ask for Rome's permission first. After the fifty years of payments ended, Carthage believed that they no longer needed to request Rome's permission to go to war anymore. When Carthage subsequently got stuck in a war with one of their neighbors, Rome declared that Carthage had broken the treaty. Rome, knowing they would easily defeat Carthage this time, kept making unreasonable demands to ensure that negotiations to prevent a war would fail; when the negotiations did fail, Rome declared war and sent a massive army to attack Carthage.
