"Barbaric" is a term that has been romanticised to infer the primitive and brutal nature of life and warfare during the Middle Ages (ca. 5th to 15th centuries)

The term can also relate the the loosely coined "Barbarians", which was given to tribes and people outside the Roman Empire prior to the onset of the Middle Ages. As the rapid expansion of the Roman Empire and the influx of foreigners (i.e. barbarians) into the Roman lands were responsible for the demise of the the Empire, it could be another reason why the Middle Ages are labelled as 'barbaric'.

It is however, not appropriate to label the entire Middle Ages period as barbaric as there very many discoveries and occurrences during this time that were very civilised and eminent and far from the stereotypical and contemporary definition of barbaric.

By what other name is the medieval period also known?

The simple answer is that the medieval period is also called the Middle Ages. There is some complexity, however. The period from the 5th through 10th centuries was called the Dark Ages, but the term Early Middle Ages is more common now. What used to be called the Middle Ages, a time from the 11th to 15th centuries, is now often counted as the High Middle Ages (1000 to 1300) and Late Middle Ages (1300 to some time in the 15th century).

the difference between the renaissance and the middle ages is that the middle ages was a time of survival and religious belives. During the middle ages people still believed in god. Also, there were many raids, and travel was not safe. People focused on getting enough food and survivng in the harsh way of life. The middle ages is known as the dark ages because of how harsh people lived. On the other hand the renaissance was of time of rebith, invention, and bring back the classic ways of the Greek and Roman ideas. People lived in luxury and enjoyed life unlike the people of the medival era, otherwise known as the middle ages.

When the medieval ends why was it called the Renaissance?

AnswerRenaissance means "rebirth" in french. This period was known as the rebirth of knowledge. The emphasis was turning from god, to man, and science and art were becoming more and more important. AnswerThe terms medieval and Middle Ages were invented by people of the Late Middle Ages, who felt very self important, to distinguish themselves from the people of the Early Middle Ages, who they considered barbaric, and the High Middle Ages, who they considered uncouth. They wanted to stress their connection to the learning of the Roman Empire. In time, the term was usurped by people of what we call the Renaissance, who did precisely the same thing, but included the people of the Late Middle Ages among the barbaric and uncouth. Their derivative connection to Rome was termed a Renaissance, or rebirth of Roman values. Our view of the Middle Ages is largely determined by detractors from the Middle Ages who lived in the Renaissance. We accept their view that the people of the Middle Ages (who were not particularly into witch burning, but did spread the Arabic numerals and algebra through Europe and founded the first universities) were superstitious, but the people of the Renaissance, Reformation, and Counter Reformation (who burned witches by the thousands and banned the works of Galileo) were scientific. I believe a more rational view of the Middle Ages leads inevitably to the conclusion that they are misrepresented in common history. Anyway, that is my opinion.
