Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. On May 5, 1868 General John Alexander Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic declared Decoration Day to honor all military personnel who had been killed during the US Civil War. It was first observed on May 30, 1868, three years after the war had ended, at Arlington National Cemetery when the graves of those killed were decorated with flowers. Decoration Day was officially renamed to Memorial Day in 1967.
