Your roza can only be invalid if food or drinks pass through your esophagus. Therefore using toothpaste is allowed as long as doesn't pass your esophagus. In smoking however, the smoke does pass your esophagus and therefore makes your roza invalid. A huge part of Islam is resistance, which means you have to try to get to as close to perfection as possible even though you'll never be perfect. The purpose of Fasting (Roza) is attaining 'Piety' - Taqwa. Taqwa doesn't mean keeping hungry. It is a kind of restraint on our feelings and emotions.
