Traditionally it was the day that workers received gifts from their employers, and in Britain this is still observed although given before Christmas. Churches used to give money to the poor on that day from a special collection box.

These days the day is just a holiday. In Australia, you spend the day recovering from overdosing on turkey and plum pudding while watching the cricket. There are often huge sales at the stores as well (in Australia in addition to many other countries), so many people go shopping. Some people choose to go skiing, hunting, or ice skating.
