It is Woolworth's that is credited as being the first in America to begin selling modern glass Christmas ornaments in 1880. However, they were not the first ever anywhere. Commercial, modern Christmas ornaments date back to at least the early 1800s, when glassblowers from Lauscha, Germany began mass-producing the glass baubles. Queen Victoria helped popularize the trend throughout Europe - her Christmas tree in 1832 was covered in the decorations. Then, sometime in the 1870s, F.W. Woolworth discovered the trend on a visit to Europe, and, being the first to import the German-made decorations to the states, where he first sold them in 1880.
