Christmas in July is not a real Christmas: it is a tongue-in-cheek way for people in some countries such as Australia to experience Christmas during the winter, just as people in the northern hemisphere do.

The story goes that, in 1980, some Irish tourists in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney were missing their home and thrilled to see snow. They persuaded the manager of a Blue Mountains hotel to hold a party, calling it "Yulefest". The event was hugely popular - but more than that, other hotels and restaurants saw its potential as a money-raising venture, and continued it in ensuing years.
