As of October 2023, all 50 states in the United States recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. The day commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and has gained increasing recognition over the years, culminating in its designation as a federal holiday in 2021. Many states have also enacted their own legislation to officially recognize and celebrate Juneteenth.
As of now, South Dakota is the only U.S. state that does not observe Juneteenth as a state holiday or holiday observance. While many states have recognized Juneteenth to celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States, South Dakota has not designated it as an official holiday.
In April 2012 it was reported that 42 states now recongnizes Juneteenth as a State Holiday!

Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas. These days it’s known as Juneteenth Independence Day or just Freedom Day and celebrates the end of slavery throughout the once again United States. General Robert E. Juneteenth is a special day in history. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but it did not reach the slaves in states that were part of the Confederacy until much later. The Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Texas on June 19, 1865. Because of this, we celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth is mostly celebrated in Texas and surrounding states.
