Valentine was a priest who worked in Rome during the rule of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor made a rule that soldiers couldn't get married, as he thought this made them weaker warriors.

Valentine disagreed with this and would perform secret weddings for couples. He was caught and sentenced to death. Before he died he wrote a letter an unknown woman who he himself had strong feeling for. The letter was signed "from your Valentine." He is said to have died on February 14th.

The church later made him a saint for upholding the divine right of marriage and made him the patron saint of lovers and made February 14th St. Valentine's Day.

  • No such record of a Valentine was known before the Middle Ages, possibly until Chaucer, 14th century CE, or even a religious "history" published in nearly 1500CE; a bit late to be the first mention of something that happened supposedly 1200 years earlier (it was really handed on by word of mouth for that long?).
  • There is no good reason given for naming the person and day a saint and saint's day; as the pope at the time said, his name is known to be worthy, but his acts are known only to God - the only facts they had about the person were his name and date of death, which happened to be February 14, and did not even know the reason for his martyrdom, if he even was martyred.
  • The year of this apparent martyrdom is sometimes given as a time outside the reign of the emperor involved, which does not make sense at all if they are talking about the same person.
  • He was made a saint in 496CE, and various reasons - including the standard purpose for saints' days in early Christianity, to replace a nonChristian holiday or celebration - have been given, but none have any evidence besides hearsay to support them, even from those who created the day. It appears they simply chose to create the holiday for the sake of it.

One story is on the 14th of February in about 270AD, a Christian Pope called St Valentine was beheaded by orders of Pagan King Claudius II for marrying Christians. Helping Christians was illegal. St Valentines day celebrates love in reconnection of his sacrifice. This is just one of many stories though.
It is about love love each other don't be mean to people love your family and your friends especially your boyfriend or girlfriend.
