Memorial Day is a day to honor all military personnel who died during a war in which the United States was involved. The original date of the holiday was on May 30th and the original name was Decoration Day. The President of the United States or his appointed representative places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Many other cemeteries all over the US have similar ceremonies that people attend to give their respects.

The National Memorial Day Parade is held in Washington DC and there are other parades held in many cities in all 50 states that people attend. Since 1971 when Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees much of the significance of the holiday has been lost and it is generally accepted as being "the beginning of summer" instead of its original meaning.
