Santa clause originated in Turkey and was known as Saint Nicolas he was a wealthy land owner and on his birthday he would send fruit especially Oranges to orphanages as presents for the children. The tradition took of from there. The Dutch still celebrate Saint Nicholas day on the 5th of December as a separate affair from Christmas keeping Saint Nicolas for the children and Christmas a more religious time. Needless to say Santa Claus is slowly taking over there as well. the Turks who are mainly Moslem's celebrate Saint Nicolas day as well with Jewish sales people selling Christmas trees to Moslem's.
