Why is Diwali celebrated?

Diwali is mainly a Hindu festival. It is also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists for different reasons.

There are several reasons to celebrate Diwali depending on the group celebrating it. Diwali or Deepavali is a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. All of these religions celebrate Diwali as the Festival of Lights.

The lights that are lit signify victory of good over the evil within an individual.

The various reasons for Diwali are:

• In Hinduism it is the homecoming of Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over the Ravana. or Killing of Narakasura by Lord Krishna.
• In Jainism, Diwali marks the attainment of nirvana by Mahavira on 15 October, 527 BC.
• In Sikhism it celebrates the return of Guru Har Gobind Ji (1595-1644), the sixth Guru of Sikhism, who was imprisoned along with 53 other Hindu kings at Fort Gwalior by Jahangir.

The name "Diwali" is a contraction of Deepavali, which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome.

Diwali is celebrated on New Moon day called Amavasya. It is celebrated to welcome Lord Rama, Sita and Laxmana (Lord Rama's brother) back to the land of Ayodhya after spending 14 years in the forest in exile. On Diwali day also called Deepawali, the entire village of Ayodhya was lit by small earthen lamps filled with oil; these are called 'diyas'. Lights also are used as a symbol to celebrate victory of good over evil.

Lord Rama rescued his wife, Sita from the clutches of Ravana by slaying Ravana, who was a powerful demon king in what is now Sri Lanka. Lord Hanumana, the god of wind and strength was Lord Rama's source of eternal strength in this war of good over evil.
