Mothering Sunday is a Christian festival celebrated throughout Europe during the sixteenth century. On the fourth Sunday of the season of Lent (Laetare Sunday) people returned to their mother church for a service, this was either a large local church, or more often the nearest Cathedral. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering". In Europe, over time this religious festival has been transformed into Mother's Day but the date on which it occurs is still determined by its religious origins.
However, in the US, President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 established Mother's Day as a US specific national holiday in May and broke the link with the religious timetable.
