Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day or May Day, is celebrated on May 1st each year to honor the contributions of workers and the labor movement. The date was chosen to commemorate the Haymarket affair, a labor protest in Chicago in 1886 that advocated for an eight-hour workday. The celebration gained international recognition after the Second International declared May 1st as a day of solidarity for workers in 1889. Since then, it has become a day to promote workers' rights and social justice.
