Thrift stores, consignment stores, yard sales and even a friend or relative's attic may yield vintage clothing items that can be modified with inexpensive accessories from the craft store to create stunning and unique Halloween costumes.

All a witch costume really needs is a flowing black dress or skirt and a hat. Mom or grandmother might have an old evening gown or even a negligee. Thrift stores frequently carry long skirts. Pair a filmy skirt with a black tank top and a shawl, and add a pair of vintage shoes or boots. A witch's hat can be purchased from nearly any drug store or department store near Halloween.

A female vampire costume can be much like a witch costume, with the addition of white face makeup and red lipstick. For a more seductive vampire look, substitute a short skirt or dress, fishnet stockings from a costume shop and high heels. Rather than buying and trying to wear fake vampire teeth all night, try drawing fake blood down the side of the chin with lipliner.

A male vampire can find vintage suits at the thrift store. A black suit, white face makeup and hair gel are all that are really needed for this look. If a less traditional vampire costume is desired, a black leather jacket, black jeans and boots can be switched for the suit, and the hair can be spiked up or styled for a punk effect.

A male or female gypsy costume can be easily assembled from thrift store items. Head scarves, costume jewelry and old blouses can also be used in pirate costumes. Flea markets are good sources of cheap leather accessories, such as belts and vests, that would be appropriate accessories for a pirate costume.

Zombies are extremely popular today. All that is needed to create the perfect zombie costume is a vintage suit or dress from a thrift store or yard sale and makeup for special effects.
