Deer are not "bad for the environment". Too many of anything, including deer, is bad, because it means they will probably be unable to find sufficient food and will end up starving. If a given plot of land can support 100 deer, and there are 200 deer in that area, probably more than 100 of them will starve, since the 100 "doomed" deer will eat some of the food, which is effectively wasted when they end up dying anyway.
