How can someone make a Welding Procedure Specification?

A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a document that provides variables and conditions of a welding procedure that is produced for a very specific application. To write one properly, experimentation and calculations must be done to find the correct parameters for the procedure. To generalize, a WPS must include all known parameters of the process; including process type, current, current type, voltage, shielding gas type, shielding gas flow rate, base metal, electrode type and size, filler metal type and size, joint design, and travel speed. There may be more variables than listed, depending on the application. One must also remember that on a WPS, ranges for variables are used that are adjustable by the welder or welding operator. Ex. Current (Amperage) 150-170 A instead of just saying 155 A. To find these ranges is where calculations are necessary.

Definition of argon welding?

Argon welding, also known as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), is a welding process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to create a welding arc. Argon gas is typically used as the shielding gas to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination. This process is commonly used for welding non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and thin materials.

Which method of welding requires the welder to control everything except the adding of filler metal?

The method of welding that requires the welder to control everything except the addition of filler metal is known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), commonly referred to as MIG welding. In this process, the welder manages the welding parameters such as voltage, travel speed, and arc length while the filler metal is supplied continuously from a spool. The welder focuses on maintaining the correct technique and positioning as the filler metal is automatically fed into the weld pool. This allows for a more efficient and consistent welding process.

HOW TO SELECT THE BEST WELDING ELECTRODE?

Metals and thermoplastics can be fused together by heating and melting them together, a process known as welding. Here, an electric arc is created using electric power, and the heat it produces melts the metals. Expert specialists fuse two components together by passing current through a workpiece using a welding electrode. This is the course of arc welding. Consumable or non-consumable electrodes are available. Gas tungsten arc welding is an option for non-consumable electrodes and gas metal arc welding for consumable electrodes. The metals that need to be welded, the welding process, and the environment in which the electrode will be used all play a role in the electrode selection…Read More

What is the gas used in welding?

The most common gas used in welding is a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide, known as shielding gas. This gas helps protect the weld pool from contaminants in the air and stabilizes the arc during the welding process.

What is the difference between friction stir welding and friction welding?

Friction stir welding also known as FSW means that the metal is not melted during the process of joining. This is a solid-state process in which you use a third "body" tool to join two surfaces. Between the tool and material a lot of heat is created which results in a soft region in the metal close to the FSW tool. Friction welding or FRW is also a solid-state welding process whereby heat is generated through friction between a moving tool and the component being worked on. A so-called lateral force "upsets" the materials being joined in such a way as they are fused. No melt occurs during the process, friction welding is therefore not really a welding process in the sense of electrode or gas welding. It is a technique for forging metals together. Friction welding is commonly used with special metals in the aviation and the automotive industries.
