Oil-based polyurethane and water-based polyurethane differ in their application and performance on wood surfaces. Oil-based polyurethane has a longer drying time and emits strong fumes, but it provides a more durable and glossy finish. On the other hand, water-based polyurethane dries faster, has low odor, and is easier to clean up, but it may not be as durable as oil-based polyurethane.

Can you stick PVC on to varnished wood?

Yes you can ... BUT ..... the old varnish was cellulose based, modern "varnishes" are polyurethane based and as such are more harder. It also depends on the on the style and quality of the PVC you wish to adhere to it. To be on the safe side, you can sand the polyurethane to help in adhesion, and if a solvent based adhesive could melt the pvc, .... I would try a waterbased contact adhesive. Apply this product to both surfaces, press them together and immediately pull them apart again, leave until tack free (or nearly dried) and then press them back together again for final adhesion. How can you tell the difference between water based and oil base polyurethane once it is on the floor?

Generally a colour difference is the thing to be looking for. An oil based poly will generally have a browning effect on the timber that increases with age. A waterbase poly will generally give very little if any tonal change. Bear in mind that newer waterbased polys are 100% polyurethane products that will exhibit very litlle tonal change in their lifetime, but earlier products (and some "new") are co-polymers that sometimes seemed to bleach or even whiten timbers. Old solvent based poly (a product still available in some countries) will have a definite yellow coloured characteristic.

It means, you can add pigments to it to change the hue a bit. Of course you can do this with any paint, as long as the pigment paste has the right kind of binding fluid (waterbased paint can only be tinted with waterbased pigment or coloring fluid). It can also mean, that there's a specific product (pigment paste) available that' suitable to add to this kind of paint.
