i own a '83 650 hawk. I have found the main negative wire that connects the negative ground behind the battery compartment to the starter has a short in it somewhere. I will turn the key to "on" and without starting the bike, will wiggle the wire. I will be replacing that wire during the winter months. hope this helps.
