There could be a short in the wiring if a 1990 Ford diesel starts and then shuts off after 30 seconds. The short could be a hot short which causes the wiring to get extremely warm and then short out causing the engine to die.

If its only when the engine is cold its the secondary air injection pump. It pushes air directly in the exhaust manifold to lower emissions. It should shut off after 30 seconds or so
Park on a level surface. Drain the oil and change the filter. Add 4 quarts. Start the engine and run for 30 seconds. Shut off, wait 30 minutes and check the level. Add as necessary. You now know the capacity.

lube all the door jams with w/d40 and open and close them each for 30 seconds or so to get the dirt worked out of them. do each door and the lift gate also. good luck
