several hundred (under five),Dogs in the British army are not pets as you would expect because the army is forbidden to have them, the army gets round this is by having the dogs as serving soldgers.They have service nos.,ranks and are paid wages which can be docked for breaches of dicpline.Such as growling or biting civilians,unirating or defecating on parade.

Because Army dogs have ranks they also can be busted or reduced in rank.The Royal Ulster Rifles famously had a bulldog that was a warrant officer,served in several campaigns in Africa (receiving campaign medals in the process) for fifteen years and was reduced in rank four times.

In modern operations many dogs are used for explosive search and tracking,several have been awarded medals for bravery.
