Nelson Mandela was jailed for (technically) "using violence to overthrow the current government" in 1963. He was the head of the ANC (African National Congress) and they had planted several bombs in hotels and trains. He was in jail for a total of 27 years before a world wide movement started to have him released from jail in 1988. The South African government said he could go free if he promised to refrain from trying to over throw the government! Mandela (who was an educated lawyer) replied that prisoners cannot legally enter into a contract. So to do what they asked - he would first have to be freed!

He was released - with no conditions on February 11, 1990. This movement was so large - Mandella's release was televised world wide!

Nelson Mandela was held for 27 years in Robben Island prison (and later in Pollsmoor prison) in South Africa. He was imprisoned for life in 1964, and was only released after apartheid was fully abolished in 1990.They would have had him for 42 but changed their minds and set him free.
