The relationship between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Princess of Kiev, specifically Princess Olga, is historically significant. Olga, who ruled in the 10th century, is credited with introducing Christianity to Kievan Rus', laying the groundwork for the eventual Christianization of the region. The Roman Catholic Church is the largest religion-in fact, Louisiana is the only southern state that has a Catholic majority. The largest Protestant denomination is the United Methodist Church followed by the Southern Baptists and Presbyterians. The Pentecostals are next followed by the Episcopalians.

Today's interpretation of "separation of church and state" implies that religion of any kind cannot be involved in any governmental entity, ceremony, or action. This implies that one's religion must be limited in the life of an individual. In that sense, "freedom of religion" - that is to say, the freedom to exercise one's religion over the lives of others - is hindered.
When speaking of the US Constitution, it should be noted that the term of "separation of Church and State" appears nowhere in the Constitution. What the US Constitution prevents is the government from establishing a State sponsored religion or make no laws regarding the establishment of religion nor prevent the practice of a peoples religion. As a comparison at the time of the US Constitution, Great Britain's state religion was the Anglican Church.
