As he approached his final years -- he died at age 55 -- Henry VIII of England became morbidly obese, and probably developed Type 2 (adult onset) Diabetes as a result. He suffered from boils, and likely from gout as well, aggravated by his too-rich diet and poor eating habits.

The diabetes and associated pain from his other conditions, as well as his continued lack of a male heir, may very well have cost him his sanity at the last. However, one rumor -- that he suffered from syphilis -- has been largely discredited by modern scientists; syphilis was well-known in Henry's day, yet none of his doctors ever even hinted as his having contracted it.
