Prince William of Wales met Catherine Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in the year 2001. Soon after, they became very close friends and eventually started dating. Supposedly, after William saw Kate participate in a St. Andrews Charity fashion show in 2002, William decided that she had really caught his eye and approached her.

Kate 'Catherine' Middleton was described by many of her classmates as 'shy and skinny' throughout most of her years at St. Andrews Preparatory School in Pangbourne, England and also during her beginning years at exclusive, co-educational boarding school Marlborough College. Soon after, when Kate enrolled at University of St. Andrews, she was ready to meet her prince charming.
