In the war against Argentina over the Falkland Islands as both were claiming the island. And the Argentinan rulers were sure Britain would not be able to defend the Island as it is far from Britain , but the British Navy and the R.A.F had other ideas thet defeated Argentina, with their ships and jets.

The anger is still felt by the Argentinan side at the world cups and a win for Argentina is considered a revenge over that defeat . It was clearly shown by Maradona in the 1986 world cup.

Major was faced with challenges to his leadership of the Government by two other Ministers, Trade and Industry Secretary Michael Hestletine and former Home Secretary Douglas Hurd. A leadership election was held within the Tory Party as to who should succeed Thatcher, which John Major won- although he fell short of the winning margin by 2 votes, the other two candidates conceded defeat and he was officially appointed Prime Minister. He remained in office until 2nd May 1997, winning the 1992 election in his own right rather than just as a 'caretaker' PM. Leadership contests of this kind after a Prime Minister resigns are unusual- it's more common simply for the Chancellor to take over unopposed, and lead the Government as PM until the next election.

Thatcher served as a backbencher in the Tory Party for a couple of years before being ennobled as Lady Thatcher of Kesteven in 1992, and being elevated to the House of Lords. She served in the Lords for about 15 years before advancing dementia forced her to retire completely from politics (and, indeed, from public life in general) in her early 80s. She now lives a secluded life, and is 87 years old as of November 2012- her husband, Dennis, died on 26th June 2003.

Her daughter Carol has made a name for herself as a journalist, TV pundit and author. Her son Mark was recently in trouble after allegations that he was involved with a mercenary group that was planning to overthrow the government of Sierra Leone.
