Cromwell was one of Henry's chief advisors, rising from secretary to the Chancellor to Chancellor then Lord Privy Seal.
Thomas Cromwell carried out everything the king wanted from divorces, marriages, executions to bringing money into his exchequer. Cromwell was very intelligent as Henry VIII has also been speculated to be, so he probably saw advantages in the conversations they had.
However it is known that Henry VIII used to hit Cromwell when he was angry and call him a knave (A man of humble birth).
Although Henry agreed to his execution, deliberately getting a poor executioner to do the job (it took 6 hacks to get his head off), he later regretted it. He referred to Cromwell as the best advisor he'd ever had and blamed the lords of his council for misleading him.
