When and why was the Chinese one child policy introduced?

the policy was introduce because there where too many people being born and the country could not handle that many people. when china had a famine in 1970 they realized they had too many people and they needed to prepare themselves if it happened again.

China had a serious problem with over-population. This was due to advances in health and nutrition and advances in medicine.

In historical times couples would have many children, of whom many would die in infancy, in adolescence and as young adults. They would die of diseases, of accidents, of infections, of famine, natural disasters and from warfare and violent crime. As few survived to adulthood and themselves had children, the population did not grow rapidly.

Once living conditions improved, many more children survived, and they had many more children them selves, and they also survived. The population grew very rapidly, threatening to exceed the simple agricultural resources needed to feed and house them

There are many approaches to limiting population growth, but the Chinese government took a very autocratic route and simply decreed that from a certain date no couple may have more than one child.

The policy has succeeded in limiting the population growth, though there have been some bad side effects, notably the abortion and killing of girl children in favor of boy children.
