Israel can sit on the UN Security Counsel but only if elected by its regional group to do so. Until 2000 Israel was denied participation in the Asian group and was admitted provisionally to the, Western Europe and Other Group (WEOG). Israel became a permanent member of the WEOG in 2004 and is now eligible for election to various UN bodies including the security counsel.
