The first person in modern times to have sex-reassignment was Lilli Elbe. She died a year after surgery. Christine Jorgenson was the first successful sex reassignment case. However, there might be a much older case during the time of ancient Rome, since Nero married a transsexual person.

It is always bad taste to mention a transsexual person's birth name. They were never supposed to have that name. They were born with what they regard as a birth defect. To a an actual transsexual person (not someone who is merely "transgendered" instead), disclosing someone's birth name or transsexual status is a violent, immoral act.
