ah, good question. One I've pondered and then found the answer adn you'll find the term for 'leader of the UN' is Secretary-General

Firstly, you need to be elected to the General Assembly (UNGA) by your countries permenant diplomatic mission to the UN.

Then, it all depends on your countries regional grouping. They rotate the Secratary-General elections via. regional grupin, and as it is (2010) it is in Asia. So that is alaso crucial to when you get elected

Finally, One of the countries on the Security Council (UNSC) will back you as a candadite for the Secrateriat's top office. From then one it's up to the 192 member states of the UN to decide
