The advantage is mainly that it is a gateway to Eastern Europe, which is the EU's main goal. The EU wishes to gain more countries in the East, which currently include Albania, Macedonia, Croatia, Montenegro, and Turkey (Bosnia and Herzegovina has been approached and encouraged to join as well as Kosovo, although no application has been submitted).

The disadvantage is mainly that Bosnia and Herzegovina's economy is in a terrible shape. The country currently has an unemployment rate of about 50% and a debt about 50% that of their GDP. The citizens also have an adequate to somewhat low income. The country is also highly corruptible.

Which countries are candidate countries for joining the EU?

Croatia has applied for membership to the European Union and has passed the candidate stage. It will join the EU in July 2013. Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey have all applied for membership to the European Union. Their applications have been approved and are currently undergoing background checks and negotiations, but have not been approved for membership status yet. The next country to become a member of the EU will most likely be Iceland. Albania has sent in its application for joining the European Union, however it is still being evaluated and has not yet been approved. Albania is currently not a candidate for joining the EU. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are two countries that the European Union wishes would send in applications for membership. Bosnia and Herzegovina has expressed that they are working on an application. Kosovo is unlikely to become a member so easy if Serbia is to be granted admission, due to their sovereignty dispute.

Is the EU a positive thing for European countries?

Yes it is. It stands for a united Europe and prosperity for all. Almost every European country plans on joining the union, and currently, one country (Croatia) is assuming a position now while four others (Turkey, Iceland, Macedonia and Montenegro) await for further acceptation, and two more (Serbia and Albania) have sent in their applications to be reviewed. The EU also has its eyes on Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Kosovo.

Who are the non eu member states and when did they join?

Non-EU member states refer to countries that are not part of the European Union. Some notable non-EU member states include Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, which are part of the European Economic Area (EEA), but never joined the EU. Switzerland is another non-EU country that has opted for bilateral agreements with the EU instead of membership. Additionally, countries like Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina are candidates or potential candidates for EU membership but are not members as of now.

Does the EU mind that most of Turkey's citizens are Muslims?

No, the EU doesn't mind. The EU is a secular organisation, and there are plenty of Muslims in the EU already. Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia are also planning to join the EU (though they haven't formally applied yet), and they are all majority Muslim countries. The objections to Turkey joining are to do with how democratic it is and its Human Rights record. Article 301 of the Turkish Penal code makes it illegal to insult Turkey, the Turkish ethnicity, or Turkish government institutions. Turkey's support of Northern Cyprus in the Cyprus dispute is also a problem.
