NATO conducted military action in the Balkans conflicts to prevent the massacre of civilians, it has contributed to and lead the ISAF forces in Afghanistan, it has taken action to prevent terrorist movements in the Mediterranean and to protect maritime traffic from Somali pirates. It is currently engaged in action in Libya to protect civilians from Colonel Gadaffi's military.
NATO's role (when first founded) was to protect its member countries from the USSR. (Now Russia.) Since the USSR no longer exists, NATO's role is to protect the national sovereignty of its member countries.

the world was mostly divided between Nato (America and western Europe) and the Warsaw pact (Russia and eastern Europe). Which started the cold war. Also after the war the Truman Doctrine was created basically telling any country that wants Communism out of their country and need help America and the U.N will help. Which is why we help the South Koreans in the Korea war.
