Ukraine's origins can be traced back to the medieval state of Kyivan Rus', established in the 9th century. This federation of Slavic tribes was centered around the city of Kyiv and is often considered the cultural and political precursor to modern Ukraine. The establishment of a distinct Ukrainian identity evolved over centuries, influenced by various historical events, including periods of foreign domination and the struggle for independence, particularly in the 20th century. Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, solidifying its status as a sovereign nation.
