There is 27 members of the EU. The establishment of the European Union expanded the political scope of the European Economic Community, especially in the area of foreign and security policy, and provided for the creation of a central European bank and the adoption of a common currency, the euro. they make European laws thus removing the need for national governments (theoretically).

I think there is some debate, at the present time, about whether the EU is actually good, given the tremendous economic problems that it is facing, and the debt crisis affecting Greece and Italy. However, in general unity works better than disunity. Europe has a horrendous history of numerous very destructive wars between European nations, and the primary goal of the European Union is to create a new political climate in which European nations will never again wish to attack their neighbors. Economic cooperation is an additional benefit (if it works).
