Yes, in the early days of the Mormon church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), they raised silk worms in areas of southern Utah and Arizona, especially in a city called St. George. They did this to be as self sufficient as possible, as at the time, the area was not part of the United States and there was no train service that far west.
