Birds have internal fertilization like human beings. The majority birds do not have a penis. So, they mate just by pressing their cloacae mutually and the male shoot sperm into the female (as the cloaca is the only one hole in birds through which they mate, excrete and lay eggs). The male sperm then swims up the female's oviduct and fertilises her eggs which is an internal fertilization. It's only after this that the egg is coated in shell and laid.
