Once the pupa dies, it will begin to turn color. Before it emerges, it turns black and the orange wings can be seen through the pupa shell. If it doesn't emerge within 24 hours of changing color, it is most likely dead. After 48 hours, it is dead. A brown or other color pupa (other than black/orange when it is preparing to emerge) is a dead pupa.
The male Monarch has a black spot on each wing the female does not.
Monarch butterflies service a wide range of consumers, from stupid people to bill gates.
it is not possible to tell until the caterpillar has formed into a butterfly
It might be a Monarch butterfly. See the link below to help identify this:
The Viceroy Butterfly looks almost identical to the monarch butterfly, and that makes the viceroy a mimic. Birds know that monarchs are not good to eat, so the viceroy avoids being eaten by looking like the monarch. The queen butterfly, the painted lady and others are sometimes mistaken for monarch butterflies.
I've heard it takes about two weeks. Hope I helped
You can tell the difference between a male and female Monarch butterfly by examining their wings. The male Monarch butterfly has two black spots on its wings while the female does not. The male also has thinner vein lines through its wings than the female.
We just heard a lady that was in a Monark butterfly club last Thru. She spoke at the St Joe, MO water garder club Aug Meeting. She told us that the male had two black spots near the ribs on its wings. These are sent glands that make them more actractive to the females. Paul Deatz Member of the St Joe Water garden club
