When grasshoppers seem to go crazy usually during heavy infestation or at the end of their life cycle they will eat just about any form of vegetation including the paint on the side of your house. Kitchen screens or any screen (the exception is aluminum screening) is also fair game for this pesky garden insect. They will even eat most fabric.
