If u give them lots of food and water with lots of room and fun things to do they will survive longer and turn into butterflies quicker.
If u give them a little bit less of everything i have previously said then it will take longer to get fatter (they need to be fat to turn into butterflies) and form into butterflies, so they stay caterpillars for longer.
If u give nothing, they will starve and die. (so then they don't stay caterpillars and alive for long.)
