Some of the adaptations that a snail (Apple Snails specifically) possesses is the fact that they have both 1 lung and 1 gill. This means that they can either breathe air through a tube like siphon on the left side of the body, or they can absorb oxygen straight from the water. Apple Snails also have a shell door which allows them to retain moisture in the case of droughts (some aquatic snails can survive out of the water for 120 days if the humidity is high enough because of this shell door). They also tend to lay their eggs above water out of the reach of hungry fish. Apple Snails can also skim food off of the top of the water, rather than having to scavenge for it on the bottom of their environment. They will use their foot to trap food floating on the surface by funneling water through it, and then eat the food. Some snails (not apple snails) are hermaphroditic, which means that they do not need a male and female to reproduce, they are capable of asexual reproduction; which in the case of a small population of snails, can greatly increase their numbers very quickly.
there shells
The snail has its shell for protection.
A snails shell protect it from preditors
Some adaptations of mollusks include an operculum that most univalves have for protection, the radula of the moon snail that is used to drill through other shells to get their food, and the jet propulsion movement and ink sac of cephalopods to escape predators.
· Long antennae for enhanced sense's of smell and touch · Lubricated (slimy) surface for extra movement In emergencies the snail can fully retract into its shell for added protection
A limpet has a shell that is much stronger that a snail's and they are small and not really a good food source
The hypothesis could be: A snail travels faster than a worm because of its muscular foot and ability to glide on a layer of mucus, allowing it to move more efficiently than a worm that lacks these adaptations.
