Look for an insecticide containing bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, esfenvalerate, chlorpyrifos, diazinonbifenthrin, carbaryl, cyhalothrin, or permethrin. Insecticides containing any of these chemicals will usually prove effective at killing chiggers, but you should read the label carefully to determine if a specific insecticide is formulated for mite or chiggers. Your best bet for a yard is something you can apply in a hose end sprayer using your garden hose. many of these types of sprayers have an adjustable rate setting (1 oz per gallon, etc.) You have to shop carefully though since if the chemical is too diluted, obviously there will be no benefit, but this is the easiest way for a homeowner to do it.

You might also try to get a quote from someone off of Craigslist for a 1 time power spray for chiggers (with some kind of guarantee) to see what kind of prices you get.
