Caterpillars are generally covered by long bristles called setae. The setae hairs have several important uses, but one such use is to dislodge individual hairs, directed as throwing spears toward whatever creature is causing the stres; like Picking the insect up, and rolling them around your driveway Some people are more sensitive to these hairs than others. The small hairs can peirce the upper layers of the skin. This causes a phsycal reaction from the small hairs such as itching and hot skin. For those who already have Allergies to foods, medications, etc. may be prone to having some sort of small localized reaction, causing even more itching and discomfort. I personally have never had any bad side effects from capturing these larva, calling them George, and playing with them constantly. I don't think that I would eat one though. Young childre may be more suseptible than adults. I'll leave it up to the parents to determine whether to allow their children to handle insects that they happen to come accross. David
