i don't know the proper answer, but i know butterflies use their feet to taste if the leaf is good enough to lay eggs on.
on the underside of the leaf
milkweed leafs i would say
Most butterflies lay their eggs on plants that will be eaten by the caterpillar, when it hatches. Some species lay their eggs on the tops of leafs, some on the bottom, some at the leaf axils, some on flowers, and some on stalks

um, no. butterflies eat like nectar or something from flowers. but monarch caterpillars eat milkweek leaves. The question of the butterfly diet is very popular, and relatively simple to answer. In brief, most butterflies do not eat anything, although they do drink liquids. While butterflies do not eat in the traditional sense, they have a proboscis, or long tube in their mouth that acts like a straw for drinking. You will often see butterflies perched on flowers, manure piles and fruit gathering different nutrients. Another common butterfly behavior called puddling refers to butterflies that congregate in shallow water or wet areas to grab a drink on a warm sunny day. The video at the top of the article shows a close up view of a Melissa Blue gathering fluid and nutrients from the ground. People interested in butterfly photography should take note of puddling butterflies. Water patches in ditches on the side of the road are a great place to find a variety of butterfly species. There are always exceptions to the butterflies do not eat rule. Dr. Paul A. Opler of the U.S. Geological Survey, for example, says, "Longwing butterflies such as the Zebra butterfly are able to collect pollen from certain flowers with their proboscis and to break it down and absorb amino acids (proteins) which contribute to the ability to survive, mate and lay eggs for long periods (6 months or so). With their short proboscis (tongue) the adults of Harvester butterflies can actually pierce the bodies of woolly aphids and drink their fluids--this would be the only bugs that adult butterflies eat." "The caterpillar of almost all butterflies eat various parts of plants. Each species may specialize of only a few kinds of plants or plant parts. The caterpillars of the Harvester butterfly and its relatives are exceptions in that they feed solely on aphids."

Monarch caterpillars eat milkweed. Swan Plants are a variety if milkweed. Dogbane and giant milkweed are two other varieties. The family name is Asclepias. It is true that monarch caterpillars will eat pumpkin although they need some milkweed. Only the larger caterpillars can eat pumpkin though. The caterpillars will not eat any other leaf no matter how hungry. They will rather starve to death than eat a different leaf. The reason I know all this is that I have raised over 15 caterpillars and I have watched every stage of their life from hatching to making a chrysalis to be coming a butterfly. _____________________________________________________________ Monarch Caterplillars mainly eat Swan Plants but large ones can survive on pieces of pumpkin. The above answer is totally FALSE! Monarch caterpillars (cats) eat the Mlkweed plant. The mother lays her eggs directly on the Milkweed, on the underside of the leaf. The cats then eat the leaves. If they eat the leaves of any other plant they will sicken & die. I can tell you from years of gardening & lots of research that went onto my butterfly garden, that cats do not eat pumkin or the leaves of any other plant other than Milkweed. I would never think of feeding them pumpkin & I have never heard of a Swan Plant. The Latin name for Milkweed is Asclepias, & there are many different kinds of Asclepias. I have pics of Mpmanrch caterpillars on my facebook page, Flowers in Bloom, follow the link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Flowers-in-Bloom/187266108057173?ref=hl Monarch caterpillars DO NOT EAT PUMPKIN!! Monarch cats eat Milkweed. If you feed them pumkin, or anything else other than Milkweed, they will sicken & die!! There is NO truth to what the above poster wrote, "that larger cats eat pumkin but need some Milkweed." That is an untrue, false & ignorant statement to make. Monarch cats eat Milkweed & only Milkweed. The mother lays the eggs on the Milkweed, & they eat the Milkweed leaves. Not Pumkin or anything else! Stop coming on here making riduculous ignorant comments that have no basis in fact!!
Butterflies do not care for their young as other animals do. They lay eggs on plants that their offspring can eat and that is the end of their care. Blue Morpho butterflies lay eggs on several plants including the pea plant family the caterpillars prefer.
A Monarch caterpillar will gain about 2,700 times its original weight. A large monarch caterpillar can eat an entire milkweed leaf in less than 4 minutesA fifth instar Monarch caterpillar hangs upside down in a 'J'. It spins a silk button to hang from, rests for about 10-12 hours, and then sheds its skin for the final time. The pupa stops wriggling and the outside skin hardens into a protective covering that will protect the newly forming butterfly inside.Monarch butterflies fly 2,000 miles or more to the cool moist Oyamel fir forests in central Mexico. They do this to escape the coming cold, snowy weather. There they hang out with millions of other Monarchs and wait out the winter. They then start to migrate north by the end of March in search of milkweed to lay their eggs on in the southern parts of the United States.
You should know this, but if you don't, butterflies lay eggs on leaves. They are so smart, they know where to put their eggs. If the butterflies doesn't know and puts it in a random leaf, that could be a problem.
butterflies need plants because they need to lay their eggs on the leaf!
