You don't have to tip painters. They usually add in that cost in the contracted amount. If you feel they did a good job and are all men then buy a few cases of beer for them. I had a new roof put on the house about 8 years ago and it was during the summer and it was very hot. I'd make up icy cold lemonade for the men or have an ice cooler full of pop or bottled water. When they finished the job (depending on the time of day) I'd make Sandwiches and give them all a few cold beer. Sometimes just give them the cases.
It is not customary to tip painters because they are contractors and so only expect to be paid the price they quoted. However, if you feel that they did an exceptional job it is completely up to you to decide if you want to give them a tip. If you feel a tip is in order, also remember that, besides money, you can give tips like gift cards or a good home-made meal.
