In general, internships are for students and recent graduates. However, IF (and that's a big "if") you can legally work in the U.S., there are many jobs where you can get "one the job training" or learn the industry and climb the career ladder. Taking university classes at night while working during the day is also a time-honored way to better yourself. (Interns are unpaid employees, but they are employees, so you do have to be a legal resident even for an internship.)
